Painting Classes






Steve Parsons is from Richfield, UT and has been painting since 1970. He has been teaching for 30 years at various places and has taught at Provo Art & Frame since 1998.

Oil Painting Classes:


These classes are for beginning to advanced oil painters. In Steve's class you will learn drawing skills, how to mix colors, and different painting techniques.

You may contact Steve Parsons at 801-754-3779 with any questions or to let him know you will be attending a class. He does not require you to pre-register.


Steve has two locations for his painting classes:

Every other Tuesday from 5:00-9:00 pm
Every other Thursday from 5:00-9:00 pm
There is only one class per week
$20 per class

What to bring to the first class:
Purchase the best quality supplies that you can afford. Provo Art & Frame will give you a student discount if you tell them you are taking this class


SCRAP:
Look through magazines and books to find pictures of different things (scraps) you would like to paint.

Get a collection of at least 10 different scraps to bring with you to the first class. With these scraps Steve will help you decide which one will be the best learning experience for your first painting.

Bring numerous pictures of paintings to copy, (Note) All pictures or art work copies that you desire to do in class must be approved by the teacher,

BRUSHES:
#2, #4, #6, #8 (all flats, bristle brushes)

PAINT:
White - Titanium or /&
            Titanium & Zinc  White mixture
Red - Alizarin Crimson Permanent
Yellow - Cadmium Yellow Light
Blue - Ultra Marine Blue
Brown - Raw Umber
Black - Mars Black

PALETTE:
Disposable Palette about 12"x16" in size or larger. A grey palette is best.

PALETTE KNIFE:
A trowel type is the best, and more sturdy.

PAINTING SURFACE:
Stretched canvas or canvas glued to wood. Either 16"x20" or 18"x24" in size.

PAINTING MEDIUM:
Grumbacher Copal Painting Medium, or Gamsol lite, and SMALL cup to put it in.

PAINT THINNER:
Gamsol odorless paint thinner- and a bottle to put it in.

SKETCHING TOOLS:
#2 pencil and kneaded eraser.

AEROSOL HAIR SPRAY OR SPRAY FIX:
for temporarily sealing your sketch.

RULER:
to help with sketching (A yard stick is available in the classroom).

CLEAN UP:
Paper towels and old phone book sheets for cleaning pallet knife.

SMOCK OR APRON:
To protect clothes.

WATERLESS HAND & BRUSH CLEANER:
"Goop" or others with lanolin, but NO PUMICE.

A BOX:
To put everything in.

HANDY THINGS TO HAVE:
Q-tips - to clean paint up from small places

Baby Oil - for misc clean up

Tape - Masking or scotch tape to hold down disposable pallets

Pencil and note pad - for keeping notes
